Lengwe National Park

Lengwe National Park is one of Malawi’s lesser-known but equally fascinating wildlife reserves. Located in the southern part of the country, about 75 km from Blantyre, the park covers an area of approximately 887 square kilometers. It was originally established to protect the rare and endemic Nyala antelope, which remains one of its main attractions today. The park features a mix of dense thickets, open woodlands, and seasonal rivers, creating a diverse habitat that supports a variety of wildlife species.

Unlike other national parks in Malawi, Lengwe lacks permanent water sources, making the wildlife more dependent on artificial waterholes, which provide excellent game-viewing opportunities. Its proximity to Majete Wildlife Reserve and Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve makes it an ideal stop for visitors exploring Malawi’s rich biodiversity.

Wildlife

Lengwe National Park is home to a variety of mammals, with the Nyala antelope being its star species. Other herbivores found in the park include:

  • Kudu

  • Impala

  • Bushbuck

  • Waterbuck

  • Warthog

  • Baboons and vervet monkeys

While Lengwe does not have large predators such as lions or leopards, smaller carnivores like civet cats, genets, and mongooses can be spotted. Occasionally, hyenas have been reported in the park.

The artificial waterholes attract a significant number of animals during the dry season, providing a spectacular sight for visitors. The park’s dense vegetation also offers shelter for many of its animals, making game drives and guided walks exciting and rewarding experiences.

Birds

Lengwe National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, boasting over 330 recorded bird species. The diverse landscape provides a haven for both resident and migratory birds. Some of the notable species include:

  • Böhm’s bee-eater

  • Crested guineafowl

  • African paradise flycatcher

  • Livingstone’s flycatcher

  • Purple-crested turaco

  • African broadbill

  • Trumpeter hornbill

  • Yellow-fronted canary

The presence of seasonal pans and wetlands attracts water birds like egrets, herons, and storks. The best time for birdwatching is during the wet season when migratory birds from Europe and other parts of Africa arrive.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Lengwe National Park is during the dry season (May to October). During this period, water sources become scarce, and animals gather around the artificial waterholes, making them easier to spot. The vegetation is also less dense, improving visibility for game drives.

For birdwatchers, the wet season (November to April) is ideal, as the park becomes lush and vibrant, and migratory birds arrive. However, road access may be more challenging due to muddy conditions.

Weather & Climate

Lengwe National Park experiences a tropical climate, characterized by two main seasons:

  • Dry Season (May to October): This period is cooler, with daytime temperatures ranging from 18°C to 28°C. The park’s vegetation becomes sparse, making wildlife viewing easier.

  • Wet Season (November to April): Temperatures rise to around 25°C to 35°C, accompanied by heavy rains that turn the park green and lush. Although this season is excellent for birdwatching, it can make travel within the park more difficult due to muddy roads.

How to Get There

Lengwe National Park is accessible by road from Blantyre, the second-largest city in Malawi, which is about 75 km away. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by car.

  • By Road: The main entrance to the park is via Chikwawa, with well-marked roads leading to the park gate. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the wet season.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Chileka International Airport (Blantyre), where visitors can rent a vehicle or arrange guided tours to the park.

For those exploring southern Malawi, Lengwe is a convenient addition to itineraries including Majete Wildlife Reserve, Liwonde National Park, and the Lower Shire Valley.

Health & Safety

While visiting Lengwe National Park, consider the following health and safety tips:

  • Malaria Precautions: The park is located in a malaria-prone area, so visitors should take anti-malarial medication, use insect repellent, and sleep under mosquito nets.

  • Hydration and Sun Protection: The climate can be hot, especially during the wet season. Carry plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and use protective clothing.

  • Wildlife Safety: Although there are no large predators, always follow park guidelines. Avoid approaching animals too closely, and stay in designated areas during self-drives.

  • Road Safety: During the wet season, roads may become difficult to navigate. A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for safe travel.

Lengwe National Park offers a unique and rewarding safari experience, especially for visitors interested in observing Nyala antelopes, diverse bird species, and other wildlife in a less crowded environment. Its accessibility from Blantyre makes it an excellent day trip or multi-day adventure for those exploring Malawi’s natural beauty. Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, a birdwatcher, or simply looking for an off-the-beaten-path safari experience, Lengwe National Park is well worth a visit.
